FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is your service area? Do you travel to other regions?
We are located near the geographic center of coastal southern California. Our service area includes Southern and Central California. If you are farther north than Santa Barbara and in Central California we may be able to work with you if there are multiple people in your area needing service.
  • What preparations should I make?
Please keep children and all pets away from the mold dog for the duration of the inspection. This is in order to minimize distractions and prioritize safety. Animals must be kept in another room while the mold inspection is being performed. Your pets can be moved later on in the inspection to make sure all rooms are fully searched. You can also turn off all air purifiers and close all windows prior to the inspection to be extra cautious with Misty's scent detection work, though she is very well trained to smell low levels of all types of mold.
  • How long does an inspection take?
This is a case by case basis but your average normal sized single family home is likely in the neighborhood of 2-3 hours for an inspection but there are numerous variables with each home that can slightly reduce or increase this amount of time spent at your house. This depends on the size of your house and how many sources of mold the dog locates. If your home is extremely large then the time of inspection will be longer. If you have a larger than average home you can contact me for an estimate on the amount of time we would need to perform the inspection. The inspection time frame includes discussion regarding findings as well. Since people have a variable number of questions that can also cause the inspection to be shorter or longer.
  • What does a mold dog inspection with us include?
The process includes a full search of all interior living spaces of the residence. The inspection also includes up to 2 vehicles per residence, checking if furnishings are mold source, as well as a search of the garage if accessible. At the end of the inspection there is a discussion of results with our handler Tyler who has well over a decade of experience of living with mold sensitivity so he has many helpful tips & tricks. We also send a follow up email with detailed guidance on next steps.
  • What is the accuracy of finding hidden mold in my home or business?
A mold dog's accuracy is typically said to be around 90-95% at detecting hidden mold. The accuracy really just comes down to a number of factors like airflow, home design, past remediation history, previous floods etc. No two jobs are alike and many unique circumstances can come up in this line of work. There is no guarantee Misty will or will not find a particular source of mold although mold dogs have been found to be highly reliable searching for hidden mold in homes and have been a useful tool to many families suffering from mold illness. A key part of why this is so amazing and important is because general air samples often miss mold that Misty is able to find. Usually almost all houses do have mold and Misty will alert to it's location(s).
  • Does the service need to modify the property in any way?
No, we will not cut, drill or modify anything other than perhaps move a lightweight piece of furniture to access a wall with your permission of course.
  • Do you offer mold remediation or removal?
We are a detection only service, we do not remove or modify your property in any way so therefore we are not remediators. We are only marking potential problem areas that the dog detects with pieces of non damaging painters tape where mold sources are to let your inspector know where to sample. It is conflict of interest for your mold inspector and your mold remediator to be the same person because your remediator earns more money the more mold is found. It is also a conflict of interest to do the sampling portion of mold detection as Misty's alerts would be upselling our own lab samples. We are an unbiased, unaffiliated service who only engages in mold dog detection and referring our clients to other services we believe will best suit their needs.
